Happy New Years!
Wow, it was a crazy week! We got a lot accomplished this week.
Please review school expectations with your student. As we have entered the second half of First Grade student are expected to know and follow the rules. I love our Moral Focus curriculum which focuses on wisdom, respect, self-control, etc. These are taught and expected of my students.
Students need to know to charge their computers at night. If your student makes it part of their routine coming home then they are less likely to forget.
Purple Folders: Please empty these every Friday and return them each week.

Parent/ Teacher Conferences will be held at the beginning of February. I will send a sign up at a later date.
Academics:
Moral Focus: We are learning about Perseverance this month. Perseverance means to never give up. I emphasize this heavily. Students should persevere through things that are hard, easy, entertaining, or boring.
Phonics: We are reviewing what an open syllable is. An open syllable is a part of a word that ends with one long vowel. For example the word "robot" has two syllables. The first syllable say "ro-" and the second part is "bot." The first syllable is open because it ends with one long vowel. The second syllable is a closed syllable because it has one short vowel closed in by another letter.
Comprehension: We will be working on comparing and contrasting nonfiction texts. Students will be reading more animal books to prepare for this. To practice this skill have students identify similarities and differences at home. This could be while reading but also in other areas as well.
Writing: The students are having a blast with their opinion writings so I am actually going to extend out our opinion unit out a bit further. It is great to see students so excited about a subject.
Math: Next week is our middle of the year testing for math. Students with meet with me individually to review various math skills. There is no need to prepare for this. This will give me great information about how to best assist your student moving forward.
Social studies: Students are learning about various landforms around the world and how the can impact people's living. For instance, high mountains often come with snowfall.
