2/24

 What a cold week! BRRR! Be sure to check the weather often and always send your student with appropriate outdoor gear!

Important Dates:

Feb 28th: Picture day and homework is due!

March 10th: Half Day (pickup at 11:30, no lunch provided)

March 20-24 SPRING BREAK 

March 31st Homework due!

Academics:

Phonics: Students will be learning about Diphthongs ou and ow both of these say ow! For example, cow and shout. Both have the ow sound. ou is mostly found in the middle of the word and ow tends to be at the end of a word but there are some words with it in the middles like frown or clown.

Comprehension: We are going to be wrapping up our unit about characters next week. We will review all the skills we have learned thus far, character traits, mental state, and character's motivation.

Writing: We are finishing up our study on adjectives and sentence types (interrogative, exclamatory, and declarative). 

Math: Students have been working hard on using a number line as an effective strategy. We will start our geometry unit! Students love this unit. We will start by talking about 2D (flat shapes) and how to make them into halves and fourths. Then we will move into 3D shapes.

Science: We will continue to explore our solar system! We will talk about about how many planets there are and see how they are different than ours.

Hello Families!

Thanks so much for helping your student with their 100 day projects and Valentine mailboxes. Both days were special and fun!

Important Dates:

Feb. 16th, 17th, and 20th: NO SCHOOL

Feb. 28th Homework due and Picture day  * I have extra order forms if your student did not come home with one.

Academics:

Phonics: We will be working on short /oo/ like in book and took. We will also being learning about long /oo/ spoon.

Comprehension: We are working on character's motivation. A character's motivation is why a character does something. This helps reader know why a does does or says something.

Writing: We will be working on adjectives. These are words that describe a noun or verb. The soft bunny hopped. She laughed loudly.

Math: We will be continuing to work on word problem strategies, number lines, and missing addend problems.

Science: We will be starting our space unit! This is a fun unit that students love. We will look at our solar system and all the cool things inside!

Hello!

It was busy week in 1st grade! Today we had so much fun for our 100th day. 

Upcoming Dates:

Academics:

First grade will be reviewing in all subject areas next week.

 Hello families!

Parent Action List:

  1. Parent/Teacher conferences are coming soon. Click HERE to sign up. I have 28 slots for my 28 students. I hold one conference for each student. Please sign up and then comment with your student's name. Please enter the date and time you selected into your calendar. These will be in person.
  2. Please look through the February homework and read carefully about the 100th day project and the Valentines mailboxes. These are fun projects but the team wanted to give you dedicated times in the homework to work on them. The 100th day project is for a grade.

  4. I have had a lot of computers coming to school uncharged. Please make sure your student has a routine established to charge their computer.

Academics:

Phonics: We will be working on the /or/ sound. This can be spelled a few different ways: or, ore, and oar. These spellings/ sounds can be found in fork, store, and roar. This is a continuation of the bossy  R unit. 

Comprehension: We will look at a character's motivation. This is the reason why a character does something in the story. This helps them understand the character and why they make their choices.

Writing: Students are still working on narratives with a focus on the problem and solution of their stories. In grammar students are going to work on compound sentences with using the conjunctions of but and and. 

Math: Students will develop their addition and subtraction skills while using a number line. Number lines also assist students in counting and identifying numbers. 

Social Studies: We are wrapping up our unit with looking at community helps and symbols from our community. For example, an American flag represents our country, while the Colorado flag represents our state.
