Hello families!
Quick note: Fun Friday toys should be SMALL and NON-ELECTRONIC toys and your student is only permitted to bring ONE. If it makes sound leave it at home. It can get loud enough with just the students! Also Monday- Thursday there should be NO toys in your student's backpack just school work and snacks! Thank you for supporting your student with this!
Music concert: Don't forget our Music Concert is on Monday NIGHT!!!!!
Class Pictures: Tuesday is our class photo and spring pictures. I sent home order forms last week. IF you have any questions please contact the front office. Students should wear their uniforms.
Phonics: We are going to start introducing vowel teams. Vowel teams are two vowels that sit together in a word.Over the next two weeks we will look at ee, ea, ai, ay and we will also look at Y making the long e sound. Examples: Tree, tea, bread, sail, play, baby. I am going to spread this all out over multiple weeks to ensure proficiency.
Reading comprehension: We will be looking at cause and effect in both fiction and non-fiction texts. Cause: Its raining outside. Effect: I put on a raincoat. When reading with your student it may help to identify the cause and have them find the effect. You can also challenge your student by giving them the effect and asking for the cause. Reading homework is due on Friday.
Math: We will be doing some NHA Math assessments next week to see what kind of growth our students have made. We will continue doing our geometry centers as well. There will be no Math homework.
Social studies: We are going to start looking at famous landmarks and symbols of America. This will include the American flag, Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Mount Rushmore, Washington Monument, etc.
Field trip: Please turn in your field trip permission slip and money as soon as possible. Your child will also need a sack lunch, which means EVERYTHING can be thrown away. My chaperone spots are filled but your are more than welcome to join us there. You will be responsible for the purchase of your own ticket and transportation. Students will still need to follow the direction of the chaperone and stay with their group.

2/21
Phonics: We will be reviewing Vowel-consonant-e words (bake, bike) and rules, along with a review the r-controlled vowel sounds (er, or, ar). We have not explored the spellings for r-controlled sounds yet but will in the near future.
Comprehension: We will be focusing on finding the lesson or moral of the texts we read. Students should ask themselves, "What did the character learn?" I will be sending home reading homework that will be due next Friday. It is about Text-self connections. Students should look for things they can relate to in the stories they read. If you are reading informational texts students can record what they find most interesting instead.
Math: We will be wrapping up our geometry unit next week. We will review shapes (2D and 3D) and fractions. Students should be able to identify when something is divided in halves, thirds, and fourths. No homework.
Social Studies: We will be wrapping up our black history unit next week and will be looking at famous landmarks!
March 2nd: Music concert!
March 3rd: Class pictures with school uniforms!
March 16th: Field trip to the Aquarium! I will be sending home permission slips today! Please get that back ASAP! Also I can take 4 parent chaperones! The first 4 to email me will selected!
Smart watches: I have had several families ask at either conferences or via email about smart watches. Students can wear them before and after school but not during class. They can easily become a distraction to the student wearing them and to others. If you have any questions you can contact the K-2 Dean, Jenna Reeves.

I am not sending home reading homework today. So many people are going out of town or have family events this weekend. I want everyone to enjoy the long weekend so NO READING HOMEWORK.
Phonics: We will be looking at vowel-consonant-e.... most people know this as magic e! For example, bake, ride, chase, nine. The e makes the previous vowel say it's long sound or its name. Most students have already picked up on this when reading but this will now be explicitly taught to the class.
Comprehension: We are going to blend that last few weeks lessons all together. We will look at the characters emotions, mental state, and motivations to help us understand the character better. The students have excelled in this area.
Math: We will start looking at simple fractions. We will look at splitting a pizza or sandwich in half or into fourths. That is as far as we will explore with fractions. We will still be exploring our 2d and 3d shapes. Math homework will come home on Wednesday pages 81 and 82.
Social studies: We will continue to explore Black History! This week we have already discussed Ruby Bridges and Jackie Robinson. Students were blown away by Ruby's perseverance and courage!
Spring Break: March 23-27 No School! Please let me know if you will be missing any days before or after spring break!

Hello families!
Conferences have started! Please be prompt and if for some reason you need to cancel then please email me asap. If you have not signed up for a conference there is a link in the last several posts.
February 13th!
It is a half day! We will also be celebrating Valentines Day! Your student can create a valentines mail box. I would suggest a large decorated shoe box or a large decorate paper bag. If your student does not create a valentines box then I will provide a large plastic bag. Boxes need to be brought on the 13th. Students can bring valentines/candy to pass out. If you bring one valentine you have to bring one for everyone (28 students)! I would suggest if your student has a hard time reading the names to just put "To: classmate or friend." I will assist students if they need help but there is only one of me! We will be having root beer floats that day as well!
Class list:
Emmett Hadley A.
Gurshaan Eathen
Jack Zaydin
Cassius Isaac
Hadley C. Ryan
Raylan Mia
Olivia Elysee
Laila Gavin
Rhett Gage
Saree Celeste
Danelka Rory
Cannon Knox
Elena Lucy
Daylah Jenessa
Phonics: Next week we will introduce schwa! This is a fun unit but can get confusing. In multi syllable words we tend not to fully articulate the vowels and so we have a schwa sound. Schwa can make two sounds like /ih/ and /uh/. For example in the word "pizza," we say the /uh/ sound in place of the a. In the word "helmet" we replace the second short e sound for /ih/.
Comprehension: We will be working on character motivation. This is looking at why the character does or says something in the story. Homework will be on Thursday (13th) of next week!
Math: We will be continuing to look at 2d and 3d shapes and their attributes. We will also start to look at cutting shapes in half and into fourths! I will not be sending homework home next week since its a short week.
Social studies: We will be looking at famous African Americans next week in honor of Black History Month!
Music: Don't forget our Music concert is on March 2nd!
