We have had a magical week in First grade! Thank you for all the gifts and well wishes. Please be safe and have a wonderful break!
I am sending home and OPTIONAL Winter Break homework. This will hopefully occupy them if need be! Don't forget about your online book resources: Epic, Youtube, Readworks.org, etc.
Your kids are coming home with a book, You are Special. This is theirs to keep! Thank you for having such awesome kids!
Here is a sign up for second semester Friday Folders. I will send another for classroom volunteers once we get back from break. Friday Folder pt.2

12/13
Happy Friday!
With us having such a short week we will be reviewing for most of our subject areas.
Comprehension: We will continue with finding the main idea of the books we are reading. We will also continue with finding supporting evidence in words and pictures. No homework this week! With the chaos of the holidays and a short week I figured we could continue homework after break.
Phonics: We will be reviewing all the skills we have worked on so far this year. Vowels, digraphs, trigraphs, blends, etc.
Math: We will continue to work on using number lines effectively through next week and the first part on January. No homework next week.
Social studies: We are cruising through Dr. Seuss' life and impact on young readers. We will continue to read through his legacy and books this coming week!
TOYS: Students may bring 1 toy for fun Fridays only. Students may not bring several toys or electronics. I have recently had some issues with students bringing small toys for their pencil boxes. Please remind your student that toys are for fun Friday only or I will start having to collect the toys.
Winter party:
2-3 pm on 12/19. On December 19th students can come dressed like their favorite Dr. Seuss character. This can be a Who, sneetch, Cat in the Hat, etc. We will be doing Grinch themed learning all day. This will include watching the 2018 animated The Grinch. We will be comparing this to the book! We will need permission to view this at school so please click this link! Video Permission Slip
I will also need help and supplies for 12/19. All supplies will need to be turned in on or before 12/18.
Grinchmas Supplies and Volunteers
Volunteers will need to sign in at the office and will need to arrive at 1:45 pm on 12/19. Parents and siblings coming to watch may arrive at 2:00 pm. Our classroom activities are for the STUDENTS ONLY. Siblings MAY NOT participate in our activities. I have only asked for enough supplies for our 28 students. I will have coloring sheets and games for siblings if needed!

12/6
Phonics: We will be working on two letter blends. The ones we will be looking at will be -nd, tr-, st-, and cl-. On top of this we will be looking at reviewing what we have already learned this year. Since winter break is coming up we will be reviewing a lot.
Comprehension: We will be looking at main idea again. We are looking at finding evidence now to back up our thinking. We will look at words and pictures. Homework is coming home today!
Math: We are again exploring different ways to use the number line. I will challenge their understanding by change the intervals of the number lines. Instead of going by units of 1 we will be increasing that interval to 5s and 10s. There will be no math homework this coming week.
Social studies: We wrapped up our light and sound unit! We will be looking at the famous american, Dr. Seuss and his impact on others. In this author study we will look through his life, books, and legacy. We will explore his books until break and this unit will end with our Grinchmas party! It will be a Dr. Seuss themed!

Mon. 12/2
Thanksgiving break went by too fast! Can you believe we have 14 school days until Winter break?!
This week:
Phonics: We are going to do a big review and see what we still remember after our Turkey break.
Comprehension: We will be looking at finding the main idea of non-fiction text. Sometimes it can be very obvious what the main idea is but we want them to become confident in this skill. As they get older non-fiction text can get hard to understand. A great resource for this is readworks.org.
Math: We will be looking at how a number line could help us in addition and subtraction this week. It is a great tool that often times gets over looked. I am excited to see how our students take to it.
Science: We are finishing up sound and will be moving to light. Before break we came up with an awesome game. It is the smallest sound wave game. It is basically the quiet game. We would do activities be see who would make no sound waves or the smallest sound waves. It works like magic if you need a quiet moment!
Holidays: A lot of holidays are coming our way soon! This is a quick reminder that each family has their own traditions and ways of celebrating. A hot topic for the next three weeks will be Santa and Elves. Some kids are very passionate about this while others are not. Please just have a quick check in with your kids about how different people have different opinions and traditions. Thank you!
